Rome - a haiku: Eternal city, darn I almost saw the pope, Vatican City. 🤓 It's accurate what they say about Italy, if you love Rome, you will love it more down south cos it gets more "italian". Naples, you really caught me off guard. So badass – from dirty gritty streets and trains to glass filled seagull murdering back alleys to ancient palaces with vandalism, rotting windows and no budget for lighting. How did you charm me so? The dirty gritty streets had so much character, your heartbeat is strong. Your people were too warm and friendly and your food. Omg, your food. A French girl travelling with her mum came up to us to say, "you're in Naples, you have to just eat everything!" 🍕🍕🍕😱🥐🥟🍨🍮🌰🥧😱☕️☕️☕️ The espressos are manually hand pulled (last video)! Another ✅ off the bucketlist! I've always wanted to visit Pompeii since reading about it in school textbooks. It's astounding how much is preserved so perfectly (👉🏻 to see the amphitheatres, the 1st one even older than the Colosseum!) and how similar to us these Pompeians lived. Streets with bars and restaurants, mosaics with kinda a "beware of dog" sign, brothels with... 🙊🙈, houses and shops with ornately decorated rooms. Too bad Mt. Vesuvius veh shy hiding behind 🌧⛈🌦, but it gives me a reason to go back and climb it. I love southern #🇮🇹 so much! . #flyserenafly #nanax妈 #pompei #pompeiscavi

The story of Matera being European Cultural Capital of 2019 is truly one of an underdog. These Neolithic cave houses with fossils and seashells embedded within (because the whole area was the seabed in prehistoric times 👉🏻 for video), housed families of >10 living beings per cave *including* the farm animals. Everything was done in that tiny space; every family had a stamp for bread so you know whose 🍞 it was at the communal oven. Needless to say, the hygiene conditions were atrocious. Children died constantly and when the news broke, Matera was called the "shame of Italy" because this was still happening so recently in the 1950s. From the media attention, housing projects were developed nearby and the whole city was relocated – Matera was shamed, abandoned and now a ghost town. So to see it today as it is, you cannot help but feel the pride of its wonderful people in this rags to riches story. In all my travels I have never seen or felt anything like this. I urge you all to visit this magical place before it becomes another Santorini or Cinque, I am pretty sure that will not take long. . #flyserenafly #nanax妈 #🇮🇹#matera #materamazing #materacapitaledellacultura2019

M for Matera, Murgia and magic, cos we finally have blue skies! The stone houses and caves behind us have been inhabited since the Paleolithic Age; cavemen discovered this gorge and made their homes around it for the water and I suppose it carried on since the water kept flowing. This is the Murgia, Matera's National Park where you can get stunning views of the sassi (stone houses) district. AND we would never have made it here if not for friendly neighbourhood local hero Luciano who saved us so graciously by giving us a lift into town when we were lost and abandoned by my @airbnb host and the cab driver!!! There were also the men at the cafe who helped scold the 🚕 driver in italian when he drove off and the barista who attempted to call us the cab in the first place. ❤️ The warmth and sincerity of these ppl really made Italy so much more special. This is me looking at Portovenere 👉🏻 foiled plans x102 as the mad choppy sea = no ferries! 🤷🏻‍♀️🌊 So to go with the flow, we spent the day at Riomaggiore instead and it turned out to be better than expected!! If I ever come back, we'll definitely stay here instead. Vibrant and quaint at the same time. Plus there was the cutest italian boy selling gelato made by his mama near the cathedral by the mountain. 💁🏻‍♀️ You're welcome. BUT THEN I will really miss my awesome @airbnb host, Captain Andrea! Everybody in Vernazza knows him (he works for town council or is running for mayor or sth?!) He gave us orientation, planned our itinerary, bought us cappuccino, told us what to eat... Mamma mia, if it wasn't raining so much we would have gone on his little 🚤 too! His passion for life and Vernazza shone like a beacon in the rain; meeting him was definitely our most special part of Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre has been on my bucket list for the longest time, so it was an italian tragedy for me to be rained out almost everyday. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Lucky my type-A Capricorn side was forced to take a backseat this trip cos of work so nothing much was planned, and how brightly my Aquarius side shone dealing with the bad weather and hiking trail closures! We saw Levanto, walked through WWII train tunnels and chilled at the small town of Bonassola instead. Of Cinque Terre, I thought Manarola was the prettiest, but Riomaggiore is really special and Vernazza seems easiest to navigate. The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso is tough!!! Very proud of mummy who joined me for the whole hike. #toughlove lol Confirm this is where we killed our shoes! . #flyserenafly #nanax妈 #🇮🇹 #cinqueterre #manarola #vernazza
